How To Profit From A Little Seed Money

By Alexandra Vrugt

Seasoning your food can make them go from good to fantastic. Herbs are a wonderful natural taste enhancer that most of us enjoy in our daily lives. During an economy crisis, you want to get the most out of your foods and herbs are essential for that.

A number of different fresh herbs can be purchased in the produce section of your local grocery store. Very small portions of 1 or 2 ounces can cost upwards of $4, or more, if they are labeled "organic". Truth is, you can grow these same herbs right in the privacy of your own home, and at a mere pittance compared to their expensive contemporaries. Here's how to get an herb garden started:

Buy seeds. Yes, you can purchase packets of just about any type of herb that you can imagine for, normally, less than $1. Sometimes, you can find them as cheap as 10 cents! Select the herbs that you use most often to make having your own supply even more financially advantageous. Great cooks know that blending a number of herbs will give your food an amazing taste and look. So, plan to buy a few different varieties that you can blend together once they are harvested.

Put dirt on your shopping list. Clean soil can be as cheap as $1 for a large bag of about 5 pounds. Often, the soil that you buy from the store is very rich and perfect for a beginner to use for starting an herb garden. To get a maximum saving, cost-conscious people could also try looking locally for free dirt! Many times, people have an excess of soil or gardening organizations want to encourage people to pursue gardening, and so they give away their dirt. While the dirt is free, it may be worth considering any costs associated with moving the dirt.

Put the dirt and seeds in something and water often. You don't have to buy big fancy pots or specialty garden supplies to start your herb garden. You could start with something as simple as an egg carton. They make fantastic garden starters. Make sure to follow the instructions on the seed packet with regard to how much water, sun, and care your herb plants will need. Then, once it sprouts, you can either move your seedlings to a larger space or continue to cultivate them in pots. The choice is yours.

Over time, you will begin to appreciate the savings that you will gain by growing your own herbs. Not only will it be a great way to get more healthy herbs into your diet, it will also be an opportunity to learn more about gardening and the overall benefits of truly "organic" foods. There are also tons of fitness benefits that you may experience when you take up gardening. It's a fun activity that you and your family can do and enjoy together. It will be wonderful to enjoy, not only, the gardening activity and the money that you will, ultimately, save; but also the delicious foods that will be prepared with the fruits of your labor.
