The Difference Between Dental Plans And Dental Insurance

By Wade Henderson

Believe it or not dental plans and dental insurance are not the same. Surely enough, many people tend to confuse these two things but in fact they offer different coverage and involve different processes.

Knowing that there is a difference will allow you to decide which plan is more beneficial for you and your budget.

Let us talk first about dental plans. Dental plans are provided both by dental plan companies or dental insurance companies. The first thing they will request from you is your signature on a contract. There is a some paperwork involved but it is a rather simple procedure that will enable you to get a percentage off on dental procedures done by your dentist or one that you choose from a list of doctors they will provide. You will need to pay the membership and submit your application in order to start using your plan.

After submitting this application, you will start getting the discounts every time you make an appointment with a dentist from your network, without having to wait for its approval or your money back.

Dental insurance is another ball game. Here it gets a bit more complex because you need to show that you do not have preexisting conditions. For that, the dental insurance company will perform tests on you before approving your policy. That is already a big difference with dental plans. In this case, you should make sure that your application is approved before going to the clinic. The reimbursement requires you to have paid for the procedure.

As with any type of insurance, you need to have clarity on the specifications of your contract what your responsibilities are, what you are covered and what you are not. There are additional discounts and benefits that some policies have.

Some types of insurance will cover the dental work done on your spouse and will cover for certain basic preventive services. There is usually a pre-established percentage of coverage for certain services. Family dental insurance can be a very good idea because it allows your family to save some money and have quality dental care.

Depending on your case, you may also ask a dental insurance company about familiar dental insurance, or for students, or for braces.
