By J. D Theis

This is one of those questions which are really unsettling. It's akin to not buying the monthly metro pass even though you know that you are going to have to travel to work or school every day. At the end of the month you realize, you have spent more than you would have if you had invested in a monthly pass at the beginning of the month. It's all right if you are a person who makes his living in the underworld and all your income is in cash! But for the rest of us hard working individuals of society, a health insurance is more of a basic need than a luxury. Now let us not come to such as easy conclusion. Let us look at some examples and work it out whether or not one needs a health insurance plan.

If you are a person who has regular ailments, then there should be no second thought on getting an insurance plan. For example, if you are suffering from diabetes; then you know that you are going to have to get your insulin shots at regular intervals. If you have a mental condition or are into substance abuse, something is bound to happen in due course of time. And if you are a smoker, there are n numbers of arguments for you to go out and get yourself covered. Obesity is another modern day ailment which can result in serious consequences ranging from heart ailments to diabetes and even liver failure.

If you do not fall under any of the categories above, then you are either a very lucky person, you are lying or you stay in a remote village on top of a hill! Well, jokes apart; it really is a serious issue. Let us look at some examples of how a hale and hearty person can be affected by lack of health insurance.

Imagine you are crossing the road, and gods forbid you are hit by a truck. You do not have access to emergency care. Maybe in a few developed countries, they will provide you with the necessary treatment. But you will still have to pay the bills. And all the while when you are recovering from your injuries, your family will also have to suffer as you will not be providing for them. This is very real and can happen to anybody.

Make sure you are covered by a good health insurance plan. Do not make the mistake of saving a little to end up spending more at the end of the day.
