Insuring a Campervan

By Elizabeth Adams

If you are looking to insure a camper van you have to look at the RV part of the insurers' catalog or site since a camper van is known as a class B RV. Camper van insurance coverage is no different from car insurance, except for the fact that it has a few more insurance options for you to consider.

Below is a list of the insurance options you have available when when you are looking to insure a camper van...

Liability insurance- This type of insurance is required in every single state except for Wisconsin and New Hampshire. Rather than insuring you directly, it insures you by paying for damages for which you are liable for in an accident, in which you are found to be guilty.

Liability coverage consists of property damage liability, which pays for damages to other property (other cars and stationary objects such as fences), and bodily injury liability, which pay for others' medical expenses.

Collision insurance- This covers the repair expenses in case your van ever gets into an accident. You will get paid from this coverage regardless of who caused the accident. If you finance or lease your van, this coverage is almost always required.

Guaranteed Auto Protection- Lets say that your RV is stolen and you won't get it back. The insurance provider pays you $10,000 for the loss but you still owe $15,000 in financing payments to the lender. GAP covers that difference.

PIP- Personal Injury Protection is just like health insurance.

Uninsured/underinsured coverage- Protects you if the at fault motorist does not have enough liability coverage to pay the expenses.

Below are insurances that are offered specifically for RVs or campervans...

Personal belongings insurance- Because a campervan is almost like your home, you need to insure the things within it by talking to your home insurance provider.

Total Replacement Insurance- If your van is completely destroyed, this insurance will pay for the cost to completely replace it by giving you a brand new RV. If you have this coverage GAP is likely unnecessary.

Emergency Expense RV Insurance- Pays for hotel costs if your van is in the shop for repairs.

Vacation Liability Insurance Coverage- This type of coverage pays for damages for which you are liable for at a vacation site.
